EAR Today and EAR Tomorrow

Here is another observation of extra assistant referees (EARs) at EURO 2012.

The following incident occurred during the Euro 2012 group match between Germany and Portugal on Saturday 9 June 2012. The match finished 1—0. There were 4 YCs.

From a corner kick just before half time, Portugal's Pepe strikes the ball and it hits the underside of the crossbar and bounces down on the pitch and up and away from the goal. Here are the freeze frames:

EAR standing behind the goal line. Notice that this EAR2 (Ruddy Buquet) has not adopted Mark Clattenburg's Cowboy Crouch nor has he straddled the goal line.

Question: How long before the introduction of goal-line technology replaces EARs?

Wait and See

Referee Stéphane Lannoy made an embarrassing error in the 24'. By being too quick on the whistle and/or misjudging the ability and quality of the players, Lannoy lost an opportunity to play a great advantage. Here are the freeze frames:

The ball goes in the net

Germany's Sami Khedira (white 6) is fouled but keeps his balance and plays the ball to team-mate Mario Gomez (white 23) who subsequently scores.

The match officials are:
Referee: Stéphane Lannoy (FRA)
Assistant referees: Frédéric Cano (FRA), Michael Annonier (FRA)
Fourth official: Marcin Borski (POL)
Additional assistant referees: Fredy Fautrel (FRA), Ruddy Buquet (FRA)

  1. In the second freeze frame, AR2 was standing even with the keeper instead of second to the last defender. Did not see AR2 even with the second to the last defender (white #13) in the next 2 frames either.

  2. Thank you Anon; a good spot. Yes, AR2 is not quite in synch with the play. This could have been potentially critical had there been an offside call to make.
